All requirements for the degrees are listed in the Academic Catalog page for American Studies. Your requirements are set by the Catalog that is in effect in the first semester of your studies. You may opt to switch to a later revision of the Catalog. To view your Catalog, select a year on the Academic Catalogs page, open Liberal Arts and Sciences, find American Studies, and click on your degree.
Annual Evaluation Materials
Every current graduate student is required to submit annual evaluation materials by the first day of spring semester. Complete the form for the degree you are currently working on, and report on activities for the last calendar year.

Degree Requirement Checklists
Every student must file a checklist with the graduate coordinator and update it regularly until achieving doctoral candidacy (i.e., passing the comprehensive exams). Print the checklist for the degree you are working on and take it along when you meet with your advisor. Fill in the course requirements that you have completed, and deliver the checklist to the graduate coordinator, who will provide you with a copy. Be sure that the checklist in your department file is up-to-date. When you have completed course requirements, ask your advisor to sign the list, indicating that your chosen courses have filled the requirements.

AMS Graduate Handbook
The Handbook provides detailed information on our Department and graduate program, as well as instructions and advice on completing the graduate degrees. Consult the Handbook revision for the catalog year you are following. While the Handbook is based on the Academic Catalog, the Catalog is authoritative.
The College Office of Graduate Affairs (COGA) is responsible for graduate program quality and degree completion. COGA offers MA and PhD checklists for graduation requirements, and maintains a set of useful links to pages in the KU Policy Library relevant to graduate students. Current students are subject to all of these policies in addition to their catalog requirements. Please consult the policy links with any questions about University graduate policies.
